You have the right to obtain an estimate at the shop of your choice. You don't need three estimates, or even two. An estimate, or damage report as it is sometimes called, is based on the damage that's visible when the estimate is prepared. If you are shopping for price by obtaining several estimates, remember that price is not the only consideration. Anyone, either a shop estimator or an insurance appraiser, can write a lower estimate or charge a lower price simply by leaving something out. What if something that affects the safety of your car is left out? Your primary concern should be selecting a shop qualified to restore the safety, function, appearance, and value of your car. Also, additional damage is sometimes found after a repair is started, and the actual cost to repair may be higher than the initial estimate. Any additional repairs necessary to truly restore your car to pre-accident condition should also be included in your insurance claim, and a supplement may be needed. Choose a shop that will repair your car correctly and follow up the initial estimate with a supplement to the insurance company if needed.
